Each year, thousands of Americans will receive a heart transplant

Transplants are not awarded to those sufficiently healthy to live on without it.

When a medical team decides a transplant is necessary, they have come to the conclusion their patient will die in the very near future without one. For those fortunate enough to receive a compatible organ, recipients are met with a challenging and lengthy recovery process. Critical to this recovery process is the ability to relocate within a short drive of their transplant hospital so they can be closely monitored by their medical team during the first few, fragile months of post-surgery recovery. Despite being medically required, the costs of relocation are rarely ever covered by insurance.

Patients unable to afford the expense of nearby housing risk having this life-saving procedure delayed. For those that can just barely meet the expense, the total costs of such housing can result in financial ruin for themselves and their family. This is where we come in.

“I was required to stay in San Francisco for 6 weeks post-transplant. Insurance would not pay for housing. This adds much additional stress to the process.”

— Jim Keegan, Heart Transplant Recipient
